Feb 28, 2024 | Weddings, Knowledge Series, Mens, Trends

When it comes to Men’s Florals, there are various styles and trends that have emerged in recent years. Traditionally, boutonnieres were simple floral arrangements worn by men on their lapels during formal occasions. However, modern boutonnieres, which are floral accessories for men, have evolved to include a range of styles, materials, and designs.

Here are some popular styles and new trends in buttonhole trends:

Types:

Let me first talk about the various mechanics that Florists use to attach them.

Classic buttonholes – wrapped with ribbon or twine or floral stem tape and comes with two Pearl Pin needles.

Sweet Floral has done a great video on how they are used.

Mechanics:

Broach /T bar pin – This is the usual method we use as it makes it a bit simpler for most inexperienced users. See image here.

Magnet closure – These come in several shapes and forms and can be round rectangle or even a plastic enclosure. The main benefit to a magnet closure is that they don’t damage fabric – hence we use these as standard in all our female designs – because who wants holes in their nice fabrics.

Tussie Mussie or lapel cones/vases – These used to be very fashionable men’s accessory of older day but are making a resurgence. They are typically a glass or metal shaped cone that is attached to the lapel and hold a single bloom in place.

Shapes

Traditional Micro bunch: usually features a backing leaf and a small cluster of various florals and foliages. We usually like to keep ours quite masculine looking avoiding larger blooms. Stems are finished on the bottom with a floral tape or ribbon and the stems point downward like a micro bunch.

Double elongated (Diamond)
Usually attached via two magnets , this is basically two bunches stem to stem with the middle finished off to have one continuous elongated diamond shape. This is a nice change to make the groom stand out.

Floral Pocket square
As per trend section , these are becoming more popular again , but we’ve been making them as early as 2018.

Again a nice option for the groom to have a slightly more elaborate floral then the rest of his crew. Also lovely for the addition of the opposite gender in a more fluid gang.

Floral Lapels
See trends below for more info but these Floral lapels are coming in hot- I’m yet to try one but can’t wait for the opportunity!!

Materials:

Even though traditionally buttonholes features a single flower or a small cluster of flowers with a backing leaf, there are many other alternatives out there including:

Succulent

Feathers

Herbal or Textural natural items like berries, pods, small twigs

Quirky small decorative items such as buttons, brooches, or miniature figures.

Eco-friendly boutonnieres – In terms of new trends, there has been a shift towards more natural, organic, and eco-friendly designs. Sustainable materials such as recycled paper, fabric, or dried flowers are being used to create environmentally friendly boutonnieres. Additionally, the use of more unconventional shapes like the diamond, floral pocket square or floral lapel are making an entrance.

Remember that trends are always evolving, and personal preferences play a significant role in selecting the right boutonniere style. It’s essential to choose a design that aligns with the overall theme and style of the event, as well as the wearer’s personality and attire.
